Webinar -The Smart Way to Execute a Successful Pilot

Most transit agencies start with pilot projects to gain the experience needed for a successful wide-scale deployment. Patricia Carr of SolTrans, a transit agency based in Northern California, will discuss the agency’s experience piloting four battery electric buses, implementing a charging strategy, and planning for a zero-emissions fleet.

Learn key things fleets need to consider when executing a pilot program:

Identify key decision makers and team members to involve in planning

Develop a realistic infrastructure timeline (and when to engage your utility)

Choose the right external partners (vehicle OEMs, EVSE suppliers, engineering firms)

Design for long-term infrastructure needs from the start to minimize costs

Capture and utilize valuable pilot data to inform future deployments

How to fit electric buses for unique depots and deployments

Webinar - From Pilot Project to Large-Scale all Battery-Electric Transit Fleet Deployment

The First-of-its-Kind 20-Year Charging-as-a-Service Agreement Aims to Power
46 Electric Buses Serving Residents, Businesses and Visitors to the Region

Avoid costly mistakes in the transition to fleet electrification. No matter the project size, a well-defined charging infrastructure plan is critical.

As transit fleets move from pilot projects into mass adoption of battery-electric buses, there are lessons to be learned from the data center and solar industries – deploying high-powered electrical infrastructure at scale, with high reliability and low cost. These lessons will maximize cost savings and ensure buses are consistently charged and ready for their routes.

Gain real-world insight from Anaheim Transportation Network, a transit fleet that has successfully navigated this transition with 46 battery-electric buses while breaking ground on a new all-electric transit depot.

About Anaheim Transportation Network:

Operating as the flagship program of the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN), Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) is a network of 19 interchangeable bus routes with service to more than 70 stops in and around Anaheim and Orange County. ART also collaborates on long-distance connections with regional transportation providers, as well as with the City of Anaheim on transit initiatives for locals.

ART transports more than 9 million guests each year using a fleet of 81 buses, all of which are certified clean-fuel vehicles running on either natural gas or electricity. As part of the #ElectrifyAnaheim initiative, more than 50 percent of ART’s fleet will be electric with zero emissions by 2020.

Anaheim Transportation Network Breaks Ground on a 46 All Battery Electric + Solar Charging Facility

Anaheim Transportation Network Breaks Ground on a 46 All Battery Electric + Solar Charging Facility

The First-of-its-Kind 20-Year Charging-as-a-Service Agreement Aims to Power
46 Electric Buses Serving Residents, Businesses and Visitors to the Region

Continuing down its path towards becoming California’s first all-electric bus fleet, the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) has selected AMPLY Power to manage all aspects of charging for its 46 electric buses servicing the city of  Anaheim, California and surrounding communities. The production scale, 20-year contract is the first of its kind and largest Fleet Charge Management Services (CMS) agreement to date, which covers the management of ATN’s charging operations from system design, installation, equipment purchase, operations and maintenance for a fixed price per kWh consumed. The model, based on the Power Purchase Agreement that popularized solar energy, ensures mission critical vehicles are charged and ready for use every day. This agreement includes the construction of a 545kW solar canopy providing 25 percent of the total expected energy consumption. ATN estimates $4.8M of fuel savings over 20 years compared to liquid natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG). In addition to serving riders in and around Anaheim and surrounding communities ATN connects riders to regional attractions such as The Disneyland Resort®, Knott’s Berry Farm, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim Stadium, Honda Center and other large regional employment centers.

“This project marks a significant step for our community by working towards our 100 percent electric bus fleet,” said Diana Kotler, Executive Director at Anaheim Transportation Network. “Collaborating with AMPLY Power helps ensure our electric transit operations run smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. We look forward to the success of this project, growing our electrification program exponentially.”

With the agreement, AMPLY manages the charging system, networking operations and new infrastructure of chargers and solar panels. AMPLY’s sophisticated charge automation software can flatten the peak electrical demands below 2 MW and reduce utility service upgrade requirements for ATN, as well as minimize any electric grid impact for Anaheim Public Utilities. Peak load at the site would traditionally be nearly 5 MW without charge management. Optimizing the charging for ATN allows buses to achieve 99.99 percent operational availability at the lowest peak energy demand by reducing time-of-use (TOU) energy and demand costs.

The Phase One ATN Claudina Site project will be outfitted with 46 electric bus charging stations and a solar canopy covering the entire bus charging area. AMPLY selected REC Solar for installing the solar panels. Subsequent phases will include a second new facility handling maintenance and bus-washing, as well as growing the fleet to include more electric buses and chargers. Both brand-new sites will operate 100 percent electric buses on their first day in service.

Meet Elemental’s 17 Earthshot Companies in Cohort 8

Meet Elemental’s 17 Earthshot
Companies in Cohort 8

As the climate change clock ticks faster and faster, we know that every moment counts in taking action.

As Greta Thunberg reminded us during the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit, “To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5 degrees global temperature rise – the best odds given by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] – the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on Jan. 1st, 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons.”

Thanks to the 17 startups in our new Cohort 8, we now have 99 companies in our portfolio that are working to address the world’s most urgent environmental issues. Much like the Moonshot, this Earthshot is a vision for collective, collaborative, changemaking solutions, helping ensure that communities and the environment can thrive into the future.

AMPLY Power | MOBILITY

Fleet charging, simplified

Why do we love them?

One of the fastest ways to kickstart the number of electric vehicles is to convert municipal and commercial fleets. But even if every fleet operator decided to switch to EVs tomorrow, they’d have to do it in spite of persistent barriers like volatile electricity prices and underdeveloped charging infrastructure. That’s where AMPLY Power’s Charging-as-a-Service technology comes in. It addresses the many pain points around fleet electrification with a single turnkey solution, no matter the vehicle type. By providing fleet operators with the ability to design, operate, and maintain low-cost charging services, we believe the company has a strong ability to help accelerate the number of electric buses, trucks, and passenger vehicles on the road.
