ANAHEIM TRANSPORTATION NETWORK AWARDED $5M CLEAN ENERGY GRANT

Anaheim Transportation Network Awarded $5m Clean Energy Grant

Agency Set to Become California’s First All-Electric Public Transit Operator by 2025

[Anaheim, Calif., February 24, 2021]

The Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) was awarded a $5 million grant to advance its effort to become California’s first all-electric transit operator.  The grant, awarded by the California Energy Commission, will be used to acquire charging stations, batteries, and the other solar infrastructure required to support ATN’s MicroGrid and zero-emission vehicle fleet.

“This investment will assist ATN in delivering a world-class electric bus fleet that will not only benefit passengers, but will also enhance air quality for the entire region,” stated Diana Kotler, ATN Executive Director.  “With a goal of becoming California’s first all-electric bus fleet by 2025, we are excited to be creating sustainable public transportation options to meet the transit demands of local residents, employees and visitors.”

Funds provided as part of the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program will assist in the purchase, installation and integration of ATN’s MicroGrid and solar charging infrastructure.  The infrastructure includes multiple TESLA MegaPack battery energy storage systems, microgrid controller units, and heavy-duty all-electric battery charging stations at both of ATN’s facilities in Anaheim.

“In addition to ATN’s own investments, we have been working to establish partnerships and other local funding opportunities in order to realize the environmental and economic benefits of a fully solar-charged bus fleet,” said Kotler.

ATN has partnered with AMPLY Power for the management of the charging operations from system design, installation, equipment purchases, operations and maintenance. This 20-year Purchase Power Agreement and Charge Management Service includes the construction of a 545kW solar canopy that provides 25 percent of the total expected energy consumption.

ATN’s public transportation network plays an important role in connection of residents, visitors and employees to numerous regional employment centers.  In addition, ATN connects riders through the county’s regional transit hub, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), to Metrolink commuter services and the interstate Amtrak system.

Alternative Fueling Leader U.S. Gain Leverages AMPLY Power for Electric Vehicle Fleet Charging Solution

U.S. Gain partners with AMPLY Power to add EV charging that will enable polyfuel facilities for commercial and public fleets

[Mountain View, Calif., February 22, 2021]

U.S. Gain, a leader in the development and distribution of alternative fuel and renewable energy, is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with AMPLY Power, a leader in commercial electric vehicle charging. Together, the companies will offer turnkey, cost-effective charging solutions for the growing number of electrified fleets throughout the United States and Canada.

Rooted in transportation, U.S. Gain has built an extensive portfolio within the renewable natural gas (RNG) industry – with more than 25 development projects, 50 public and private fueling stations, more than 100 independent distribution points and several thermal energy supply agreements. Although RNG offers tremendous value to transportation-related emissions, U.S. Gain is confident that a polyfuel approach will be widely embraced by fleets and therefore, is excited to add electric supply and charging to its suite of Sustainable Energy SolutionsSM.

“We look forward to assisting fleets in their transition to any alternative fuel, and with regard to electric, think we can bring value to solve the infrastructure dilemma faced by so many,” commented Jon Summersett, director of product management at U.S. Gain. “Figuring out where and when to charge can be complex and feel overwhelming, but with the combined expertise of AMPLY Power and U.S. Gain, the process will be efficient, affordable and seamless. AMPLY Power is tenured in commercial fleet charging and electrical energy consumption while we bring knowledge specific to electric supply and credit generation. Further, U.S. Gain can assist fleets with other alternative fueling supply and infrastructure needs – spanning from natural gas, electric, hydrogen, propane, biodiesel and renewable diesel.”

AMPLY Power is focused on transforming commercial fleet infrastructure by removing the challenges, surprises and the learning curve that fleet operators often face when switching to electricity as a fuel. Their expertise removes the risk of time-of-use and demand-charge driven pricing variances, while offering real-time energy-flow management technology to keep fleets charged at the best cost. Together, U.S. Gain and AMPLY Power will enable commercial fleets to benefit from predictable, affordable energy charges.

“AMPLY’s Charging-as-a-Service solutions, incorporating our patent-pending Charge Management System, deliver a cost-efficient and reliable downstream fueling service for electric fleets,” said Vic Shao, Founder and CEO of AMPLY Power. “We are excited to extend this offering through U.S. Gain’s upstream and renewable energy experience so that their customers can become polyfuel consumers–our combined expertise delivering a simplified migration to zero-emission fleets.”

Additionally, further value can be derived from electric charging through credit generation. U.S. Gain has been generating and monetizing credits under California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) since the program’s inception. They have done this for nearly all eligible fuel types including renewable natural gas, renewable diesel, biodiesel, ethanol and propane. Their large volume of transactions, relationships with regulated parties seeking credits and experience with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) maximizes credit values for their fueling and charging customers.

“While our primary business is rooted in natural gas, at U.S. Gain, we believe in the value proposition a polyfuel future offers and are crafting a portfolio of sustainable energy solutions to reflect that,” said Mike Koel, president of U.S. Gain. “A partnership with AMPLY Power is the most appropriate next step in our expansion, satisfying the growing need for efficient commercial charging solutions. We’re excited to bring our expertise of electricity supply and credit generation to the table, strengthening the economic value proposition for fleets.”

As transit agencies, schools, refuse companies, municipalities, shippers and carriers adopt polyfuel strategies inclusive of electrification, U.S. Gain and AMPLY Power offer the best path to environmental and economic success.

AMPLY Power and AECOM Partner to Bolster Bus Electrification for Transit Agencies to Meet Zero-Emission Goals

AMPLY Power and AECOM Partner to Bolster Bus Electrification for Transit Agencies to Meet Zero-Emission Goals

Coupling AMPLY Power's fully managed Charging-as-a-Service with AECOM's award-winning infrastructure design and engineering ensures optimal cost savings and efficiencies for transitioning bus fleets

[Mountain View, Calif., November 10, 2020] – With transit agencies under pressure to electrify their fleets, AMPLY Power and AECOM have announced a strategic partnership to help bus fleet owners address and accelerate their zero-emission initiatives. By combining AMPLY Power’s operational expertise and unique Charging-as-a-Service technology with AECOM’s specialization in large-scale transportation and utility projects, the partnership provides transit agencies with a turnkey approach to optimize their infrastructure and operations for electrification.

“This partnership is an important step in the transition toward 100 percent electric mobility.” said Andrew Bui, AECOM Vice President National Transportation Innovation Lead. “Although 100 percent zero-emission transit bus goals are still years away, it’s critical to address now so that infrastructure and facilities can scale to support efficient electric operations. To facilitate moving fleets from pilot stage to full adoption, we believe this partnership offers what a fleet operator requires, from design and financing to fleet charging infrastructure implementation and management.”

AECOM specializes in supporting electric fleet conversions by creating efficient staging, optimizing infrastructure requirements, integrating new infrastructures like solar canopies, designing and coordinating utility infrastructure, and siting new facility locations. AMPLY Power brings their economical Charging-as-a-Service model to the table, which provides charging hardware deployment, management of depot upgrades and utility interconnections, real-time software-controlled charge optimization, debt financing of capital expenditures, and resiliency planning.

Fleet electrification provides a tremendous opportunity to not only reduce greenhouse gases but improve air quality and overall public health, said Simon Lonsdale, AMPLY Power Head of Sales and Strategy. Partnering with AECOM, a globally respected infrastructure consulting firm and a Fortune 500 company, validates our fully managed, Charging-as-a-Service model and helps us expand public sector and commercial electric fleet adoption through guaranteed performance, fixed fuel pricing, and now, proven large-scale project design and engineering.

AMPLY Power recently broke ground on a project with the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN), where they estimated a potential $4.8 million in fuel savings over the next 20 years for their 46 electric bus fleet. This builds on AMPLY Power’s 2020 whitepaper, which found that in over 84 percent of the top metropolitan areas in the United States, it is cheaper to re-fuel electric trucks, buses, and passenger vehicles with electricity than fossil fuels. Through a service offering with a fixed price metered by utilization, fleet customers like ATN can draw a direct economic comparison to dispensing fossil fuel without upfront capital costs and operational uncertainty.

AECOM is currently working with Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA), initially on year-long planning efforts, and now leading facility design to accommodate WMATA’s 12 electric-bus pilot project“ an important first step for WMATA as they aim to convert their entire fleet of over 1,500 buses to zero-emissions.
“AECOM is excited to work with WMATA on their journey to electrify their fleet, and to explore the turnkey solutions through this partnership with AMPLY to help scale their pilot and accelerate their fleet conversion”, says Bui.

There’s no longer doubt that fleets need, and want to electrify, as evidenced by the increasing legislative mandates across the country, adds Lonsdale. Considering these electric buses have a lifespan of 25 years or more, and in 20 short years, California’s zero-emission bus goals will be in full effect, forward-looking transit agencies know the time is now to get serious about electrification. This partnership provides them with the qualified support and expertise they need to get them out of the gate and on the road to significant fuel and emissions savings, ahead of the mad dash that is coming. Anaheim Transportation Network Breaks Ground on a 46 All Battery Electric + Solar Charging Facility

Anaheim Transportation Network Breaks Ground on a 46 All Battery Electric + Solar Charging Facility

The First-of-its-Kind 20-Year Charging-as-a-Service Agreement Aims to Power
46 Electric Buses Serving Residents, Businesses and Visitors to the Region

Continuing down its path towards becoming California’s first all-electric bus fleet, the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) has selected AMPLY Power to manage all aspects of charging for its 46 electric buses servicing the city of  Anaheim, California and surrounding communities. The production scale, 20-year contract is the first of its kind and largest Fleet Charge Management Services (CMS) agreement to date, which covers the management of ATN’s charging operations from system design, installation, equipment purchase, operations and maintenance for a fixed price per kWh consumed. The model, based on the Power Purchase Agreement that popularized solar energy, ensures mission critical vehicles are charged and ready for use every day. This agreement includes the construction of a 545kW solar canopy providing 25 percent of the total expected energy consumption. ATN estimates $4.8M of fuel savings over 20 years compared to liquid natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG). In addition to serving riders in and around Anaheim and surrounding communities ATN connects riders to regional attractions such as The Disneyland Resort®, Knott’s Berry Farm, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim Stadium, Honda Center and other large regional employment centers.

“This project marks a significant step for our community by working towards our 100 percent electric bus fleet,” said Diana Kotler, Executive Director at Anaheim Transportation Network. “Collaborating with AMPLY Power helps ensure our electric transit operations run smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. We look forward to the success of this project, growing our electrification program exponentially.”

With the agreement, AMPLY manages the charging system, networking operations and new infrastructure of chargers and solar panels. AMPLY’s sophisticated charge automation software can flatten the peak electrical demands below 2 MW and reduce utility service upgrade requirements for ATN, as well as minimize any electric grid impact for Anaheim Public Utilities. Peak load at the site would traditionally be nearly 5 MW without charge management. Optimizing the charging for ATN allows buses to achieve 99.99 percent operational availability at the lowest peak energy demand by reducing time-of-use (TOU) energy and demand costs.

The Phase One ATN Claudina Site project will be outfitted with 46 electric bus charging stations and a solar canopy covering the entire bus charging area. AMPLY selected REC Solar for installing the solar panels. Subsequent phases will include a second new facility handling maintenance and bus-washing, as well as growing the fleet to include more electric buses and chargers. Both brand-new sites will operate 100 percent electric buses on their first day in service.

[Anaheim, Calif., September 22, 2020] — Continuing down its path towards becoming California’s first all-electric bus fleet, the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) has selected AMPLY Power to manage all aspects of charging for its 46 electric buses servicing the city of  Anaheim, California and surrounding communities.

We look forward to the success of this project, growing our electrification program exponentially.

For customers like ATN, AMPLY Power installs the charging equipment, charge management software (“CMS”) and automation, and ongoing charging operations. The deployment comes with a savings guarantee and service level commitment that every bus charges on a scheduled shift to ensure a 99.99 percent uptime. AMPLY’s platform proactively monitors charging performance 24/7, to identify, triage, and resolve real-time issues to ensure efficiency and delivery. The net outcome is that customers like ATN have the confidence all buses will be charged and ready to roll every morning.

“Our overall commitment to ATN is to provide a worry free experience surrounding the bus fleet’s charging infrastructure needs, said Vic Shao, CEO of AMPLY. “Ongoing managed charging services, instead of an upfront hardware purchase, allows ATN to focus its attention on serving ridership without the stress of charging operations.”

Through a service offering with fixed price metered by utilization, fleet customers like ATN can draw a direct economic comparison to dispensing fossil fuel without upfront capital costs and operational uncertainty. The greater Anaheim, Los Angeles and Long Beach metropolitan areas rank the highest of 25 cities studied in the amount of potential savings city bus fleets could gain from electrification programs, with or without managed charging. In its most recent white paper, AMPLY estimated more than 50 percent fuel savings on electricity compared to diesel.

The new contract with Anaheim is the latest in a series of partnerships AMPLY has signed with California transit agencies, including Tri Delta Transit and SolTrans. These agencies and other fleets see AMPLY as a key partner to decarbonize fleet operations through simple, reliable, and cost-effective electric refueling.
